Rapid Eye Technology (RET), in its most simple form, is a neurological/emotional technique that simulates, in an awake state, the natural release mechanisms that the brain employs during REM sleep cycles each night.
Understanding Rapid Eye Technology
The human brain organizes the events of our lives according to how we emotionally respond to each event. This organization method is what builds the neural networks in the brain that sends signals to all other body systems.
For example, if a person has enough events that are perceived as traumatic, then the neural networks will learn to begin processing most events as traumatic whether the events actually are traumatic or not, reinforcing the original neural network of trauma and leading to an underlying belief that life is not safe. This belief that life is unsafe affects and continuously reinforces all day-to-day life actions. The brain develops a continuous feedback mechanism that was originally developed to protect the individual but becomes so heavily reinforced that it begins to look and feel like dysfunction.
What to Expect in a Rapid Eye Technology Session
The RET client blinks and breathes throughout the Rapid Eye Technology session while Suzan provides visual and auditory input paired with vibrational monitoring throughout the process.
What Happens to the Brain During a Rapid Eye Technology Session?
When we blink rapidly the brain wave state slows to an alpha wave, causing the emotional center of the brain to come to the forefront, just as it does during REM sleep. However, during RET individuals remain fully conscious and aware of their surroundings.
For visual input, Suzan uses an eye-directing device to take advantage of the brain’s own processing and information storage mechanisms through the eyes and their placement in the eye sockets and to increase communication between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
For auditory input, Suzan reads aloud from an RET script, which is a list of words related to a certain subject. For example, the grief script includes words such as, “sad, loss, heart-broken, denial, etc.” The scripts are written based on research of universal human experiences and honor all cultures, religions, belief systems, etc.
Understanding the Alpha Brain State
When a Rapid Eye Technology client is in a rapid eye/alpha state, he or she is simply employing the body’s own natural release mechanism. The emotional center of the brain is much like an office filing room with various filing cabinets of different sizes. Each emotion has its own cabinet—a cabinet for fear, joy, silliness, terror, safety, sabotage, etc. Each day, the experiences of our lives cause the brain to create a ‘document’ ready to be filed away. The brain’s job during REM sleep is to file all of the emotional events (i.e. documents) of the day.
So what would you do if you had a four-foot stack of papers to file and only about 17 minutes to do it? You would probably do exactly what the brain does—dump most of the papers as a group into the nearest and largest filing cabinet available.
If the closest and most convenient cabinet happens to be the “fear cabinet”—which is usually the case— you have to go back into that fear to retrieve the information at any later date. Nothing gets lost in our memories; however, we do have protective mechanisms in place that allow us the ability to not have to access all of the information all of the time. In other words, we can close the filing cabinet door. Each time we access the cabinet to retrieve information, we activate the emotion of that cabinet.
Rapid Eye Technology Activates the Brain’s Emotional Center
Activating the emotion is a good thing. In an RET session, you don’t have to experience fear in order to retrieve information from the cabinet. You can if you choose, but you don’t have to.
The goal of a Rapid Eye Technology session is to honor, release, resolve and reframe the emotion. In accessing the emotion files, we honor what is stored there simply by acknowledging its presence. We use the body’s own natural mechanism to release, i.e. “remove the files from of the cabinet”. We resolve the negative pattern by moving the files to another cabinet that may feel much better—such as the “love cabinet.” Then we reframe the files, enabling the brain’s ability to perceive them differently.
Rapid Eye Technology is Not Talk Therapy
RET does not require talking about the emotional events of your life. The neurology of your brain already knows what is in there, and it will do what it needs to do to honor, release, resolve and reframe. The egoic self often wants to retell the story, but it is not an essential piece of the treatment.
